A book review for Mumsnet: The Dinosaur That Pooped...

Last Christmas the kids received a copy of The Dinosaur that Pooped Christmas by Tom Fletcher and Dougie Poynter (of McFly fame). Anyone with kids will know that toilet humour and children go hand in hand and so the book was a huge hit with my boys.

So when mumsnet blogger network offered us the opportunity to review the next two books in the series, The Dinosaur that pooped a planet and The Dinosaur that Pooped the Past, I knew the kids would be interested.

Even Miss T liked the look of the books.

In The Dinosaur that Pooped a Planet, when Danny and his dinosaur end up stranded in space, Danny's dinosaur needs to find a way to save the day and...you guessed it...that plan involves poop and lots of it.

Danny's dinosaur also uses his amazing pooping powers to get Danny and some new friends back home again when they get stuck in Jurassic times in the latest book in the series, The Dinosaur that Pooped the Past. I really liked that it was a time travelling swing that got them into the past rather than a regular time machine.

As well as enjoying the rhyming story, we also loved the illustrations, including the subtlety of Granny's house being rather green themed to match her cooking of all things green like brussels sprouts and broccoli!

The books themselves are an enjoyable, lighthearted, fun read. There are also online activity sheets available to accompany the books (see some of the links below). We always find that when resources like these are available it helps the children engage with books and reading a lot more as they will keep coming back to re-read the books and re-visit the activities on the worksheets.

As poop plays such a big part in the story there is a 'pin the tail on the donkey' style game (well it's actually pinning the poop) that you can download. There are also wordsearches and worksheets and other fun activities to really engage the kids.

D enjoyed drawing an ancient egypt theme on one of his activity sheets and he also had fun designing his own dinosaur on another worksheet.

All in all these are great fun books for children who like toilet humour but also for kids who love rhyming stories and fun illustrations too.

And here are links to a few of those resources...

There's a dino planet poop game here.

Downloadable colouring sheets and a downloadable activity pack.

  1. Ahh so cute reading together!
My son loves the dinosaur that pooped a planet. We have got him the dinosaur that pooped christmas for Christmas but we didn't know there was another book. Will have to get it for his birthday in January :D
I agree that work sheets etc make the book more interesting. My son will pick up a book again and again if he has something else relating to it xx
